Henry Tan | 10:02 PM | | 4 Comments so far
Which Taiwanese restaurant in Penang is at the top of your list? Have you tried the dishes at Taiwan Bull restaurant? If you haven't, you should give it a try; if you had, you should go to try their delicious new menu selections! Taiwan Bull has just launched their New Menu on 30th June 2015, and they even changed all their tableware. Let me show you their new dishes that we have tried.

Taiwan Bull New Menu 2015

Oh wait, before I show you the food, you might want to take a look on this promotion for Watsons member card holder. Free drinks, dessert and additional 5% off total bill? Seems like quite worth huh (another reason for you to go to try their foods :D).

The passionate owners of Taiwan Bull introduced us their new homemade Sour Plum Juice, this drink can be served hot or cold and is equally good in either way. This sweet and sour drink was so appetizing, I love it's red colour. The size of the cups are not due to the angle issue, their serving size are big in real, and the cup is cute right?

Taiwan Bull, New Menu Items 2015, Queensbay Mall, Penang
Sour Plum Juice 古早味酸梅汤 (RM 6.90)

Taiwan Bull has added a few types of Taiwanese snack and we tried 5 of them. This Chilled Crunchy Cucumber is a refreshing dish, suitable for those weight-conscious people. It is served with their special sesame sauce, somehow I thought I was eating Satay..LOL.

Taiwan Bull, New Menu Items 2015, Queensbay Mall, Penang
Chilled Crunchy Cucumber 凉拌小黄瓜 (RM 6)

Another option for healthy babies, Bok Choy with stewed ground pork was not overly greasy, it will be good to eat together with a bowl of rice or noodles!

Taiwan Bull, New Menu Items 2015, Queensbay Mall, Penang
Bok Choy 烫青江菜 (RM 6 / RM 8)

This is Lo Mai Gai (糯米鸡)? Bak Chang (粽子)? Nope, you are wrong, although the texture of this Rice Tube Pudding (筒仔米糕) is quite similar to them. The ingredients include chicken mince and nuts, it is advisable to eat together with the unique sauce served together as this dish itself was a bit plain.

Taiwan Bull, New Menu Items 2015, Queensbay Mall, Penang
Rice tube pudding 筒仔米糕 (RM 11.90)

红油 is spicy red oil while 炒手 means ravioli or dumpling. For those who love dumplings, you might want to try this Spicy Oil Chinese Dumpling. The skin of the dumpling was thin and the overall texture was good. You can control how much vinegar and red oil you want to add into this dish according to your own preference.

Taiwan Bull, New Menu Items 2015, Queensbay Mall, Penang
Spicy Oil Chinese Dumpling 红油炒手 (RM7.90)

You might thought this is the famous Taiwanese fried chicken (咸酥鸡), but this is not. This "Nan Ru"  Fermented Bean Chicken (豆乳鸡) is relatively rare in Penang, but you can get it at Taiwan Bull! We like the juicy-tender chicken with crispy outer layer, some said it tastes better than 咸酥鸡, I think both are equally good.

"Nan Ru"  Fermented Bean Chicken 豆乳鸡  (RM8.90)

Highly recommended Tomato Beef Noodle at Taiwan Bull! It may be look spicy as it is red in colour, but it doesn't even taste a little spicy, the red colour is tomato soup! I don't take beef but Henry Darling said this quintessential Taiwanese Beef Noodle is the best addition of their new menu. He said the tomato soup was so flavourful and the beef was tender and well-marinated, it was superbly good! Aww.. can they make a non-beef version for me to try too?

Taiwan Bull, New Menu Items 2015, Queensbay Mall, Penang
Tomato Beef Noodle 茄汁牛肉面 (RM 18.50)

"Sha Cha" Sauce (沙茶) is made from dried shrimp, shallots, soybean oil, brill fish, chili, and garlic. Henry darling commented this "Sha Cha" Beef Fried Noodle was a bit plain, the flavour of this dish is mainly from the beef.

"Sha Cha" Beef Fried Noodle 沙茶牛肉炒面 (RM 18.50)

Here comes the mains with rice! We ate lots of rice that night, and their serving size are big, I don't think small-eater girls can finish one bowl of their rice alone. Braised Roasted Pork Rib Rice comes with the delectable braised egg and Taiwanese pickles. The pork rib was well-marinated and seasoned, its sauce matched perfectly with the white rice.

Taiwan Bull, New Menu Items 2015, Queensbay Mall, Penang
Braised Roasted Pork Rib Rice 滷排骨饭 (RM 17.50)

From the outlook and even the taste, Fried Pork Rib Rice is very much similar to Braised Roasted Pork Rib Rice, just the way of cooking the pork rib is different, one is roasted another one is deep fried. For those who like fried stuffs, perhaps you will prefer this more.

Taiwan Bull, New Menu Items 2015, Queensbay Mall, Penang
Fried Pork Rib Rice 炸排骨饭 (RM 17.50)

Okay, enough for the pork, you can also opt for Crispy Fish Fillet Rice, it comes with a clear soup. The Dory fish is deep fried into perfect golden colour while it was still juicy and tender inside. I think this is Taiwanese style Fish & Chips, suitable for those who prefer rice more than chips. The fish was good, just that I would prefer to have more sauce on the rice.

Taiwan Bull, New Menu Items 2015, Queensbay Mall, Penang
Crispy Fish Fillet Rice 炸鱼排饭 (RM 17.50)

"Jia Yi" Chicken Rice is very famous in Taiwan, but I never tried it in Taiwan although I have already traveled to Taiwan as much as 5 times. According to the boss, the authentic "Jia Yi" Chicken Rice uses Turkey mince, but they chose to use chicken mince. The main sauces for this dish are Scallion Oil and Chicken Oil, if you like the boiled chicken (白斩鸡) which selling at chicken rice stores, perhaps you would like this too, as it taste quite alike.

Taiwan Bull, New Menu Items 2015, Queensbay Mall, Penang
"Jia Yi" Chicken Rice 嘉义鸡肉饭 (RM 14.50)

This aromatic Three-Cup Chicken Rice was full of the fragrant of basil, this dish can be very good or bad to different people. If you are those who like the fragrant of basil, then you would like this, on contrary, this dish might hard to be accepted by those who don't like basil. Although you can see the red chili on the chicken, but it wasn't spicy.

Taiwan Bull, New Menu Items 2015, Queensbay Mall, Penang
Three-Cup Chicken Rice 三杯鸡饭 (RM 17.50)

Among all the new menu selections, I like this Honey Roasted Chicken Thigh Rice the most! The grilled drumstick was marinated into perfection! Besides, this juicy Honey Roasted Chicken has a unique scent that seems like Litchi (荔枝). However, as for the sides, I personally prefer the braised egg and Taiwanese pickles of the pork rice.

Taiwan Bull, New Menu Items 2015, Queensbay Mall, Penang
Honey Roasted Chicken Thigh Rice 蜜汁鸡腿饭 (RM 17.50)

This is cute right? Taiwan Bull has a fun Kid's Menu, where the kids can match their dish by themselves. They can pick a main dish, a snack and a side dish from a list of the choices according to their liking, with the same price. And every Kid's Menu is comes with a dessert and a Yakult drink.

Taiwan Bull, New Menu Items 2015, Queensbay Mall, Penang
Kid's Happy Meal 儿童套餐 (RM 14.90)

Finally, Taiwanese desserts! Mango Frozie is a bowl of blended ice topped with mango cubes, mango sauce and a scoop of mango ice-cream. The mango is sweet but in overall, this dessert wasn't overly sweet, this is best for hot days!

Taiwan Bull, New Menu Items 2015, Queensbay Mall, Penang
Mango Frozie 芒果冰 (RM 8.50)

You can try their Ai Yu Jelly Frozie which is also a popular dessert in Taiwan. The sweetness is come from the mixture of fruits which comprising of honeydew, watermelon and mango, whereas the sourish is from the lemon. This was so refreshing

Ai Yu Jelly Frozie 鲜果爱玉冰 (RM 7.50)

From time to time, Eastin Hotel Penang will comes up with different themes to suit with the occasions. Just in this year 2015, we had been invited to review their Valentine's Day & Chinese New Year promotion as well as the Songkran Festival with Delight of Thai Cuisine promotion. This time, it's back to what Penang is famous for, the local delicacies

I started off with soups and cold platters. Good thing about food review? We get to kick start first before the guests coming in. As I mentioned before, Eastin Hotel Penang is a top choice for companies in Bayan Lepas area to do their events, so most of the time lunch buffet will be filled with these employees. So if you are looking for a place for company events, Eastin Hotel Penang will suit your needs with their attractive packages.

For the main course, a wide variety of dishes are available ranging from the spicy Kari Kepala Ikan, sweet Ayam Masak Madu and even the famous local Nasi Minyak Hujan Panas. Most of the dishes are quite okay, but one of the noteworthy one is the appetizing oven baked snapper fillet with lemon cream sauce.

Besides all the main dishes, there is this "Live" station that prepares Teppanyaki, Cendol, Deep Fried Food such as chicken, fish, prawns and so on. One of the highlight is the Cheese Murtabak whereby the chef put in a lot of ingredients that not commonly found outside. Most importantly, eat it while it is still hot from the plate!

Chiak Penang - Telur Ikan Masak Lemak
The specialty of the day was the Telur Ikan Masak Lemak, very unique just by the name itself right? Yup, literally it uses the fish roe to cook with coconut milk to make the gravy with tiny little bits of fish roe. A bit odd when you taste the gravy itself but goes really well with a bowl of white rice.

To end your lunch buffet, you could have fresh fruits as well as desserts. There were quite many different desserts from both local nyonya dessert and western dessert such as French pastries, mango mousse cake, cream puff and even agar agar! Lovely decorations on the cake isn't it?

Main Street Cafe @ Cititel Penang

Henry Tan | 9:46 PM | | Be the first to comment!
Still remember last month we wrote about the theme buffet of the newest hotel St Giles Wembley Hotel Penang, this time we would like to introduce you the theme buffet promotion at their parent company, Cititel Penang. It is the 4-star hotel strategically located at Upper Penang Road, the heart of the city. Including us, many might not aware that Cititel Penang actually has a 24-hour cafe situated at their lobby level, which known as Main Street Cafe

Main Street Cafe offers theme buffets throughout the weekends specially for Japanese food lovers. Perhaps this is due to the majority of their guests are Japanese (yes, we saw lots of Nihonjin there!). Below is the list of their theme buffet dinner which will be having promotion on the month of June 2015. A complimentary buffet voucher for supper will be given to you when you dine-in for their theme buffet dinner.

This was our first time dining in the Main Street Cafe, thanks for the invitation from the management of Cititel Penang, we had the Japanese & Italian Buffet dinner on Friday. As mentioned, their theme buffets are for Japanese food lovers, so I have to start from sushi and sashimi corner! Look at the colourful sushi, there are many choices for you to choose from.

Main Street Cafe - Assorted Sushi

Each type of sushi is served in small portion on the tray but not to worry, the friendly chef is always there to refill them :D Besides, assorted tempura is available too, however I personally prefer tempura with more crunchy outer layer.

Main Street Cafe -  Assorted Sushi & Tempura

I keep reminding myself not to forget this is buffet dinner, normally I won't eat too much of sushi as it is quite fulfilling, I will opt for the equally tasty sashimi to save more space for more yummy dishes :D Main Street Cafe serves 3 types of sashimi namely Salmon, Red Tuna and Butterfish

Unlike those fancy seafood serving in St Giles Wembley Cafe, there are only 4 types of commonly seen seafood in Main Street Cafe, which are Oysters, Scallops, Mussels and fresh Prawns. However, it is not a bad thing to me, as I can have my favourite cold oysters and prawns here, which are not served over there :D

Main Street Cafe  - Our Selections

The Action Station is where you could see the Italian element, the chef will be cooking your customized pasta according to your preference. Selection of pastas include spaghetti, fettuccine, and Penne, while sauces you could choose either Bolognese or Carbonara, or maybe you could try to order the combination of both sauces, and tell me whether it tastes good :P (hmm.. maybe it do..)

So this is my Linguine Aglio Olio Pasta! Hahax.. Actually this is Jazz's pasta, and I'm not even sure whether I named it correctly :P The linguine was cooked with olive oil, chili flakes, sauteed chicken salami and a sprinkle of Parmesan Cheese. Anyway, I did tried it and I think it taste good

Main Street Cafe serves several types of Mains, both Italian style and Japanese style. When I had a glance on all these main dishes, Gyoza (Japanese Pan-Fried dumpling), Chicken and Mushroom Pot Pie, and Chawanmushi (Japanese Steamed Egg Custard) caught my eyes, this is mainly because of my personal liking and they are not so commonly seen in other buffet style restaurants. Unfortunately, the Gyoza didn't impressed me much, even I ate it together with the black vinegar ginger, I still feel it was flavourless. On the other hand, we are quite fancy their Yaki Udon (Stir-Fried Udon), it was well-seasoned

It is good to balance up your heavy meal with some veggies! Main Street Cafe offers numerous type of salads, which comprising of Chicken Nanbanzuke (Japanese Style Marinated Chicken), Sesame Spinach, Panzanella (Italian Bread Salad), Pasta Salad with Olives and Peppers, and many more. The salad bar is divided into 3 types of salad which are ready-to-eat salads, cocktail salads and make your own salads. Of course I'll always opt for cocktail salads :D

The soups for that day were Japanese Salmon Miso Soup and Italian Minestrone Soup. Usually we could only see plain miso soup in Japanese Restaurants or other hotels, but at here, we get to try something different :D This Salmon Miso Soup is a bit oily probably because of the Salmon, but I like it though.

Theme Buffet Dinner, Main Street Cafe, Cititel Penang

There are wide array of Italian style desserts and Japanese style desserts serving at Main Street Cafe on Friday. To fit the theme, you can find few types of dessert with green tea flavour such as Green Tea Cheese Cake and Green Tea Mousse. Needless to say, there's Tiramisu and bread pudding to fit the Italian theme. We were excited to see Dorayaki (Red Bean Pancake), however it was a big disappointment, as the pancake itself was a bit dry and it was served without red bean paste.

This Omochi looks nothing special but we are impressed by the soft and melt in mouth texture. The green colour Omochi is with kaya filling while the red colour Omochi is with red bean filling, both were not overly sweet. This Omochi is definitely taste better than what I ate in some other Japanese restaurants.

Theme Buffet Dinner, Main Street Cafe, Cititel Penang
Omochi (Japanese Rice Cake)

Their Red Bean Puree is my favourite of that night, it was so smooth and the black sesame dumpling was incredibly yummy! The outer layer of the dumpling ball was soft and thin, with black sesame filling bursting out when you bite it in your mouth. I would say this is the best dessert as we know red bean and black sesame are both very good to our health, and at the same time it is heavenly tasty!

So that's pretty much all for that night at Main Street Cafe, Cititel Penang! Do take note on the promotion period mentioned above, don't miss out ya ;)
