Songkran Festival with Delight of Thai Cuisine @ Eastin Hotel Penang

Songkran Sawadee Pee Mai~ In conjunction with the traditional Thai New Year month of April, Eastin Hotel Penang is introducing their Thai buffet lunch! Thai people celebrate their New Year or the Songkran Festival from 13 April to 15 April every year. The most famous aspect of this festival would be the water fight event! Ah, how I wish to escape from the heat here and get wet during the water fights. But it's okay, as this craving can be consoled by the Thai Feast at Eastin Hotel Penang! (I can still play the water at home :P)

Top Left: Yam Hua Plee Sai Goong - Banana Flower Spicy Salad with Glass Noodles
Top Right: Nuae Yang Nam Tok - Grilled Beef Spicy Salad with Ground Roasted Sticky Rice
Bottom Left: Lab Gai - Spicy Minced Chicken Salad with Roasted Rice and Chili Powder
Bottom Right: Yam Talay - Spicy Seafood Salad with Fresh Herbs and Lime Spicy Dressing

Thai appetizer is something you shouldn't be missed, so even if this is a buffet, we will still starts with the appetizer! :D Perhaps you haven't try all types of Thai appetizer, but at here, Eastin Hotel has different types of Thai appetizer for you to try! We like all these 4 types and we personally think the Yam Hua Plee Sai Goong was nice, it was light and refreshing

Top: Tom Yam Goong - Spicy Prawn Soup with Lemongrass and Galangal Lime Juice
Bottom: Geang Juide Mara Sai Gai - Brittle Ground Soup with Chicken

Not to forget the Thai soup! To me, I'll never get bored of Tom Yam Goong, this is the signature dish that defines Thai cuisine. So what's good about having a Thai buffet? You could eat as much Tom Yam as you wish :D Look at the shrimps, there were lots of it! slurrppp~ Other than my beloved Tom Yam Goong, Swez Brasserie also serving Geang Juide Mara Sai Gai, which is a type of clear soup with chicken and vegetables.

Top Left: Kao Phad Poo - Fried Steamed Rice with Crab Meat
Top Right: Phat Khi Mao Kai- Spicy Stir Fried Minced Chicken with Basil
Bottom Left: Tao Hoo Lod Phad Khuenchaiy - Stir Fried Tofu with Celery and Oyster Sauce
Bottom Right: Pla Kapong Phad Khuenchaiy- Stir Fried Snapper with Celery & Oyster Sauce

The Thai buffet lunch serving numerous types of main course. We personally think the dishes were just average to our liking. The stir fried tofu was good, however it made us doubting whether it meets the theme of the buffet. As for the fried steamed rice, we would expect it to be more flavourful, it was a bit plain to serve as a Thai fried rice. Their Spicy Stir Fried Minced Chicken was good, but think it would be much better if the aroma of basil was stronger.

Top Left: Phad Preaw Whan Talay - Crispy Seafood with Sweet & Sour Sauce
Top Right: Panaeng Nuae - Stir Fried Sliced Beef with Light Red Curry
Bottom Left: Geang Keaw Whan Gai - Chicken Green Curry with Eggplants and Basil
Bottom Right: Phad Pak Ruam Nam Man Hoiy - Stir Fried Mixed Vegetables with Oyster Sauce

We both like the Assorted Crispy Seafood with Sweet & Sour Sauce the most, while Henry Darling's favourite dish of that day was the Stir Fried Sliced Beef with Light Red Curry, he said the curry was not too spicy yet it was rich in aroma and the beef was cooked to perfection. The Chicken Green Curry at Swez Brasserie was decent but Stir Fried Mixed Vegetables was not outstanding, it was more like Chinese cuisine.

Sakhuu Piak Maphrao Awn - Tapioca Pearls Pudding with young Coconut Flesh

The colourful Tapioca Pearls Pudding was presented in small cups, this dessert was served cold and it was so refreshing that made us crave for more, each of us ended up eaten more than 1 cup.

Packthong Sangkaya - Steamed Egg Custard in Pumpkin

This pumpkin dessert with steamed egg custard was smooth and creamy, however we would prefer to eat it together with coconut milk and honey syrup, as we think eating this alone was a bit dull and dry. But you would like it, if you prefer something not too sweet.

Kao Neaw Mamuang - Mango Sticky Rice

Mango Sticky Rice is one of the most common Thai desserts. I like the presentation of Swez Brasserie's Mango Sticky Rice, it was so delicate, and it somehow made me think of sushi :P It might not as same as the conventional presentation, but I think it is a good idea to serve it this way, as we would still have some space in our tummy to fill with other yummy desserts!

Tab Tim Krob - Water Chestnut with Jackfruit in Coconut Ice Syrup

The Tab Tim Krob at Swez Brasserie was absolutely luscious! It was one of the best Tab Tim Krob I ever tried, it was creamy yet the sweetness was just right to our liking, and the overall texture was enhanced by chestnut, jackfruit and coconut flesh.
