Last weekend bae and I went for the grand opening of Shan Jie Dessert House located at Jalan Siam, Penang, which is nearby to the famous Siam Road Char Koay Teow. It was a super hot afternoon, so definitely it is the right call for a cold dessert.
If you are turning into Jalan Siam from Jalan Anson, Shan Jie Dessert House is located on your right. The car park is quite limited along Jalan Siam, so we just parked right in front of a vacant shop house. Walking up the stairs, you will be greeted by the waitress at Shan Jie Dessert House.
The menu for the dessert was all in Chinese words so I am not too sure what are the name of dessert we ordered in English. We had the Q嫩麻糬冰 - RM6.90, something like a Mochi (glutinous rice ball) with ice. The shaved ice is topped with both black sesame and peanut coated Mochi.
We usually eat Mochi separately while it is still warm, so mixing it with cold ice was quite special. I like the texture when you bite on both the crunchiness of ice and the chewy Q-ness of Mochi, then the fragrance of black sesame and sweetness of peanut made it all perfect combo.
The second one we had was 姗姐爆爆冰 - RM6.90, shaved ice topped with popping boba and a scoop of ice cream. FYI, unlike traditional boba, which is tapioca-based, popping boba has a thin, gel-like skin with juice inside that bursts when squeezed.
Shan Jie Dessert House serves 3 different flavors of popping boba on top of the shaved ice. Personally I am not a big fan of mixing popping boba with shaved ice, which is why I waited for the ice to melt. I would hope the amount of ice cream can be increased too so that it's a even ratio between ice cream and popping boba.
The price was lower than we expect, so I would say it is quite worth the money, especially the Mochi. So if you have a craving for Chinese dessert, do give it a try at Shan Jie Dessert House!
