David Brown's Restaurant at the top of Penang Hill has just released their latest 2016 December Set Dinner & Christmas Menu. So if you are looking for a place to eat in Penang or even for the coming Christmas dinner, then you should totally read on!
Yes, Christmas is coming!
David Brown's Restaurant - Fast Lane ticket to go up Penang Hill |
Last year we were here at David Brown's Restaurant to try out their new menu after they changed new management (Read here). So again this year, we had the chance to review for their December Set Dinner as well as Christmas Menu. As I mentioned previously, David Brown's Restaurant is one of the "ATAS" (high class) restaurant in Penang, so baby and I were really glad to come here for dating and dining!
David Brown's Restaurant - Interior with Christmas Deco |
Christmas decoration is ready inside the restaurant itself, but at the point of writing, which is still more than a month to go, so probably still too early to decorate for the external. Anyhow, it is year end with school holiday and Penang Hill is always packed with people, especially students that came in buses! Massive long queue! But we got Fast Lane ticket that can skip queue like VIP! :D
David Brown's Restaurant - Red wine or white wine? |
David Brown's Restaurant - House wines |
We started off with a glass of the house wine, both red and white wine for baby and I. As this is part of their promotion for the Christmas Menu whereby ordering 2 sets of Christmas Set Menu will be entitled to get a complimentary bottle of house wine. The house wines are from Deakin Estate (Australian), namely Shiraz Viognier (red wine) and Chardonnay Pinot Grigio (white wine). Of course, if you are not fancy of the taking alcohol, you may opt to for a 10% discount off of total bill instead.

Amuse Bouche
Smoked Salmon on Baguette Toast
Amuse Bouche is a French word, literally translated as "mouth amuser". Amuse Bouche is different from appetizer as it usually acts as a complement to the wine. So for David Brown's Restaurant Christmas Set Dinner, we had a slice of baguette topped with a sliced of smoked salmon and avocado cream sauce.

Starter
Hokkaido Scallop & Smoked Duck
For starter, we had Hokkaido Scallop & Smoked Duck that came with apple remoulade, salmon roe and green with Italian dressing. Personally, I love the smoked duck especially given that it was edged with fat that makes it moist and succulent. Some may find it oily, but for me that's what makes it delicious and delicate in flavor. The refreshing green with Italian dressing or even the sweet-sourish apple remoulade were there to balance up the taste too. Hokkaido scallop was quite big in size and topped with salmon roe that pop in mouth.

Soup
Pumpkin Veloute
Next, we had pumpkin veloute for soup, another French cuisine that came with pumpkin croquette, pumpkin chips and shredded parmesan. The chef definitely loves pumpkin a lot! To be honest, I am more of those that would prefers mushroom soup over pumpkin soup. But David Brown's Restaurant pumpkin veloute was thick, rich, smooth and velvety! Not forget to mention that the few thin slivers of parmesan make even tastier! Croquette and chips added crispy texture, but be sure to eat it before they became soggy. (Yes, the time wasted on taking photos! LOL!)

Pre Entree
Mixed Berries Granita
Unlike all the previous dishes which are French, our Mixed Berries Granita for Pre Entree is actually an Italian semi-frozen dessert that made from sugar, water and mixed berries. I think it was quite nice to serve as Pre Entree as it was sourish-sweet that could tantalized your taste bud. But I supposed they could have make it nicer without all the stain on the glass or just make it one full glass.

Entree
Turkey Roulade or Seared Line-caught Barramundi or Black Angus Medley
For entree, we get to choose 1 out of 3 for the Christmas Set Dinner Menu 2016. But since it was a food review, so we have to try all! :p Turkey Roulade came with roasted potato, chicken liver stuffing, glazed apple and cranberry port demi. Personally, I am not a big fan of turkey roulade and chicken liver. But if you are you will like it as the chicken liver was such a big portion! Luckily there was the cranberry port demi (cranberry + port wine + demi glaze) that could make it tastier.

Seared Line-caught Barramundi was quite good too as it came with sauteed Hong Kong Kai Lan, potato pave, mango-pineapple salsa and Romesco sauce. Visual wise, this was the most attractive dish as it was filled with different sharp colors ranging from the red-yellow sambal color of Romesco sauce to the dark green Kai Lan.
Seared Barramundi is good as it was sweet and firm but I would suggest to dip with the spicy Romesco sauce to make it less fishy taste. FYI, Romesco sauce is a nut and red bell pepper based sauce that complement well with fish. Another good thing to know is that the Barramundi was line-caught which promotes sustainable seafood.

Out of the 3 options, baby and I still prefer Black Angus Medley. It was a black angus sirloin and slow braised rump that came with roasted plum tomato, phyllo mushroom bundle, horseradish cream and beef jus. Our medium black angus sirloin was cooked to perfection with pale pink in the middle without any juice flowing and the texture was firm and springy. That's exactly how I would like it!

Pre Dessert
Mango Sorbet
After eating a heavy meal, nothing better than having a sweet-sourish Mango Sorbet that did just enough to make you feel satisfied. Since it is just a Pre Dessert, a small scoop of mango sorbet is just nice.

Dessert
Chocolate Cremeux
Chocolate Cremeux came with bitter cocoa crumble, butterscotch, caramelized banana and vanilla ice cream. I Googled and found that Cremeux is a French dessert which is a dense, soft, classic pudding. But what we ate was more like a moist chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. I guess as long as it is sweet, thick and creamy, then it makes a good sweet ending for our meal!

Starter
Turkey Boxing
Besides the Christmas Set Dinner Menu, we also review for David Brown's Restaurant December Set Dinner Menu 2016. For starter, we had Turkey Boxing which camewith sauteed spinach, caramelized shallot and turkey jus. Basically it is ground turkey wrapped around a bone and make it like a boxing glove. The ratio of meat to fat was just nice as it was not dry and bland.

Entree
Roasted Chicken Thigh or Seared Line-caught Barramundi or Black Angus Medley
Again, for entree, we get to choose 1 out of 3 for the December Set Dinner Menu 2016. But instead of Turkey Roulade, now it is Roasted Chicken Thigh while the other 2 remain the same. Roasted Chicken Thigh was pretty good, as yours truly is a chicken thigh fan, this was definitely right on! Roasted but doesn't loose the juiciness and the tenderness, mixed with the mushroom risotta, carrot puree and crispy enoki that added another different texture.

Dessert
Green Tea Cremeux
Now, this is really a Cremeux whereby it was dense, soft, pudding textured that filled with green tea flavor. Some find that the green tea flavor was not strong enough, but personally, I felt that it was just right. (Not a heavy green tea fan) The green tea cremeux came with red bean jam at the bottom of creameux, pistachio crumble and green tea tuile. Tuile is a French thin and crispy wafer.
